01FILINGAMD puts agentic AI on EPYC with Helion, an open rack blueprint for November
AMD introduced Helion, an open OCP-based rack blueprint for agentic AI, with configurations planned to be available in November 2026.
AMD announced Helion on October 12 at the OCP Global Summit, describing it in its own words as “an open blueprint for agentic AI infrastructure based on an Open Compute Project spec-design.” It is a reference design, not a SKU. Configurations are “currently under development with ecosystem partners.”
Two example racks carry the argument, and the split is the strategy:
- The hyperscale configuration: CPU-only, 6th Gen EPYC, “can support up to 32,768 CPU cores” — dedicated capacity for agent execution, connected to separate model-inference infrastructure.
- The enterprise configuration: an all-in-one rack combining EPYC CPU nodes with Instinct MI350P GPU nodes, which AMD itself calls a “concept.”
- The software hook: an integrated token router directing agents' model calls across frontier and open-source models — asserted, with no latency, throughput or supported-model list given.
The argument AMD is making is that agent execution belongs on general-purpose cores rather than accelerators. Dan McNamara, SVP of Compute and Enterprise AI, frames it as flexibility and “efficient use of available power” — power, not price, is the constraint AMD names. AMD also pitches Helion as additive to estates customers already own.
What is not in the release: no pricing, no volumes, no ASP, no booked Helion order. The OCP contribution is a pledge — AMD “plans to contribute” the specification, which is not yet an OCP spec. HPE's quote refers to “our recent customer agreement to deploy AMD Helios” — the sibling rack, unnamed and unquantified, and not a Helion win. AMD places availability and timing explicitly inside its forward-looking-statements disclaimer.
Why it matters — The unit of sale is the claim worth tracking: AMD is contesting the rack itself and sending the agentic workload to EPYC, where its position is strongest. That converts agentic AI from a GPU-attach story into a server-CPU volume question, and attach rate is undisclosed. The first named design win or disclosed order is the datapoint.

On the weight of this: it runs on AMD speaking in its own voice through its own IR channel, with a dated named commitment — and on nothing resembling traction. Distinct outlets corroborating it in today's sources: zero. Nvidia is never mentioned in the release; the competitive reading above is ours, and no benchmark or TCO comparison exists to support it.
